As lovers and friends we are deeply engaged in several creative projects rooted under one name – parkarma.
Away from our hometown, back in Portugal, we are now based in Amsterdam, where both our relationship and this project started.
Parkarma reflects our perception of the world, bridging different forms of expression – it exposes the way we love and hate.

My name is Joana and I was born in Lisbon in November 1980.
In 2007 I gave birth to a December boy. His name is Samuel Lee and there are no words to describe my feelings for him.
Birth, on the other hand, could keep me writing for hours. Never total awareness was so close.
I have been living in Amsterdam for the past years, and this is where I fell in love with a scientist that changed my life for good.
It was also in this city that I started exploring my passion for design. I am self-taught and so far this is the way I like to learn things.
I have never been much of a talker, I much rather read and write.
I recently published a collection of poems written during the 9 months in which I carried my son inside my belly and I should add that pregnancy was the most amazing experience of my life. There hasn’t been a single day since in which I do not miss my pregnant womb.
In the near future I want to travel the world with my family in search of bigger trees. If we find a quiet place along the way I hope we can settle there.
I appreciate simplicity and humbleness, finding that what’s ordinary in life is also what interests me the most. On the other hand I totally despise cars.
My strongest ideological believe is that you can only change the outside from the inside.
If I could not see growing up as a work in progress I could never keep up with all the bad things that bring hate to my heart.
Thanks for taking the time to read and to visit our website. It means a lot to me.

1"buttons25 Feb 2007 05:32 pm
These buttons have 1″diameter (2.54 cm), and used to be designed and manufactured at home. We are currently not selling them but we kept them here in case we start doing them again or simply to remember that this was our first parkarma product ever.
If you really love one of the designs below we can still do it in a 1.25″diameter (3.175 cm) version. For that just drop as an email with what you want and we will work it out for you.

When you are a kid and you are confronted with a tree you have never climbed, you do not simply want to get up there – you want to explore it. On a first instance you will focus on the tree itself, but eventually you will figure out your own limitations. My day time job in science reflects this and I guess that is the way I lead my life. parkarma is an extension of this philosophy. A very special branch that I share with one of the intellects that I most admire. I get a huge kick out of doing this, and put a lot of love into it too, so thanks for being interested.
Take care,
esfero

polaroid camera17 Feb 2007 12:26 am
Even though this design was highly influenced by Susan Sontag’s “On Photography”, we first designed the polaroid t-shirt merely looking for the beauty in the object itself. Quickly the design triggered us to analyze concepts such as instant photography, plastic-made, surprise effect, and many other polaroid tags. This technique to seeminglessly polarize light and instantly retrieve an image, in perspective, appears to have prophecized digital photography and its vertiginous massification. Nowadays all is expected to happen fast, and polaroids, even though analogue, are a great metaphor of our everyday life. A lot remains to be said on photography, but we will finish off with a quote from Diane Arbus: “A photograph is a secret about a secret. The more it tells you the less you know.”
